A Glimpse of the Past: Abandoned Architecture and Nature
This photograph captures the historic Manthiri Manai palace in Nallur, Jaffna. The palace is characterized by its grand arches and a dome, which are still visible despite the visible signs of decay. The weathered walls and the crumbling edifice tell tales of years gone by, echoing the grandeur and majesty that once was. The overcast sky casts a gloomy yet enchanting spell, adding to the mystical allure of the scene.

Amidst this relic of architectural splendour, nature makes its presence felt. A cow grazes peacefully in the foreground, oblivious to the historical marvel behind it. Trees and vegetation sprout around the structure - a stark contrast yet harmonious blend of nature and man-made artistry. This juxtaposition paints a serene yet haunting picture, a dance between civilization’s past achievements and nature’s enduring presence.

The palace is one of the archaeological protected monuments in Jaffna District and was listed by the Sri Lankan government in 20071. It is believed to be one of the palaces or residences of a minister of Cankili, king of Jaffna, before the fall of the Jaffna kingdom to the Portuguese.
